Subject Leader – Mrs. Sophie Cole

Intent
At St. Peter’s Catholic First School, led by Subject Leader Mrs. Sophie Cole, we are dedicated to nurturing the development of the whole child, enabling them to reach their full potential. Our Music curriculum inspires creativity, self-expression, and individuality by engaging children with a variety of tuned and untuned instruments, exploring diverse music genres, and learning about a range of musical artists. Rooted in our Catholic ethos, the curriculum also fosters the CSPP Virtues and Values, encouraging learners to appreciate the awe and wonder of God’s creation. Through music, we aim to develop creative thinkers and provide a medium for children to express their ideas, feelings, attitudes, and values freely.

Implementation
Our Music curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to build on previous learning, ensuring pupils know more, remember more, and do more. We use Charanga, a world-leading music teaching and learning platform, as the foundation of our music lessons. Charanga exposes children to a wide range of musical genres and provides opportunities for composing and performing. We aim to enable all children to:

  • Create, play, perform, and enjoy music.
  • Develop skills to appreciate various musical forms.
  • Understand how sounds are created and organised into musical structures.
  • Learn how music is made using different instruments.
  • Build interrelated skills in performing, composing, and appreciating music.

Impact
Through our Music curriculum, children at St. Peter’s Catholic First School grow into creative, expressive individuals with an appreciation for diverse musical genres and traditions. They gain the confidence to create and perform, make informed judgements about the quality of music, and develop a deep understanding of musical structures and instruments. This holistic development ensures that children can express their individuality, celebrate their uniqueness, and be inspired by the beauty of music.

How to Help Your Child at Home
You can support your child’s musical journey by exposing them to various music genres and engaging in thoughtful discussions. Try asking these questions when listening to music together:

  • How does this music make you feel?
  • Do you know who the artist or composer is?
  • What does this music remind you of?
  • Could you imagine this music in any films you’ve watched? Why?
  • Do you like it? Why or why not?
