At St Peter’s Religious Education is classed as a core subject and aims to be of a quality to engage pupils’ intellect, heart and imagination.
We follow the Learning and Growing as the People of God Strategy for all our Religious Education lessons, which is the curriculum strategy for Religious Education in Catholic Primary Schools in the Archdiocese of Birmingham. The Strategy provides teachers with a range of suggested cross-curricular activities which can be differentiated to suit the learning needs of the children in their class for them to explore the Catholic faith and achieve the learning outcomes. There is a strong emphasis on pupils engaging with and responding to questions of life in the light of religious teaching.
This flexible approach enables teachers to incorporate their own creative teaching ideas into the delivery of the Strategy.
The Strategy is divided into a number of units for each year group, usually 12, which cover four main areas of study:
In each unit, there are additional planned opportunities to pray and time to reflect.
The long term plan for Religious Education outlines the units which are covered at each stage in every year group to meet the above criteria.
Here are some examples of class work and collaboration from our Class RE Learning Journals.

At St. Peter’s pupils are taught that each person is a unique individual, created in the image and likeness of God to whom God has given special gifts to be used for the good of other people. Our school mission of ‘Love God and Love One Another’ underpins our approach to preparing pupils for life in a multi-cultural society.
Each year group is allocated a different religion to study. This can be done through a whole school focus week, individual lessons on special festival days or a mini-topic week during the year decided by the year group teachers.
