Our aim is to enable children at St. Peter’s to make sense of the world around them by developing their ability to calculate, reason and solve problems, demonstrating their deep understanding of maths.
The aims of teaching mathematics are:
At St Peter's, the implementation of Mathematics is rooted in the mastery approach, ensuring every child develops the essential skills and processes that allow them to apply their mathematical knowledge across various real-life situations. Lessons are designed to be inclusive, engaging and challenging. We guide children through a structured, step-by-step learning journey. This journey incorporates concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to explore concepts, making connections and encouraging both support and challenge in their thinking. Lessons are arranged to build fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills, while promoting collaboration. Mastery in Mathematics is achieved when children have a deep, long-lasting, and flexible understanding of the subject. Oracy plays a central role, with children encouraged to articulate their thinking through structured discussions and the use of mathematical vocabulary.
The implementation of our Mathematics curriculum has an impact on our pupils through:
When it comes to times tables, both speed and accuracy are essential—the more facts your child remembers, the easier it becomes for them to tackle more complex calculations. Quick recall of times table facts is important for many areas of maths and can also boost a child's confidence. Here’s how you can help…
Times Table Rock Stars is an engaging and challenging app created to help children master their timestables. Logins should be in the front of your child's reading record. If not, speak to your child's class teacher. The app is suitable for all learners as its question-based games adapt to each child's learning needs, serving as a building block for higher-level maths concepts.

This website offers children the opportunity to practise their times tables in a format similar to the DfE check, which is taken by Year 4 children in June. It is free to use and no login is required.
Multiplication Tables Check - Mathsframe
This is an interactive maths game with quick fire questions on number bonds, times tables, doubling/halving, multiples, division facts and square numbers. Again, it is free to use and no login is required.

MathShed provides teaching tools that follow White Rose Maths, as well as a variety of online games and learning tools. Logins should be in the front of your child's reading record. If not, speak to your child's class teacher.
MathShed - Mathematics game for school and home
In order for you to support your child’s maths learning, we have created some guides to show the way we solve and record calculations at St Peter’s. Our Calculation Policy shows the progression of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division throughout the school, with examples for each year group.
